Responsibilities

M&J is actively seeking a Rail Track Inspector to work as part of our distinguished team, on complex railroad and rail transit projects in CT and Mass. Our clients include Connecticut DOT (CTDOT), Amtrak, and Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).

The responsibilities for this field-based position involve supervising railroad construction project activities performed by Railroad Force Account and Contractors to ensure conformance with the project plans, specifications, and contract documents. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to;

  • Inspection of railroad construction work to confirm compliance with the contract documents including approved shop drawings.
  • Prepare daily inspection reports/Railroad Force Account inspection, document track outages, and protective support services.
  • Perform field measurement of work and computations to validate item pay quantities.
  • Collaborate with Contractors, the Railroad, and the Client to review work and assess progress to ensure contract schedule and deadlines are maintained.
  • Monitor contractor performance to ensure work meets quality standards of contract, advise of substandard conformance of work, and assure remedial action is taken.
  • Inspect construction activities to ensure compliance with applicable safety regulations.
  • Document material deliveries, handling, and storage, and review material certificates to ensure conformance with contract documents and quality standards.
  • Update project record drawings throughout the life of the project.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skill, and Ability:

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices utilized for the maintenance and construction of railroad track infrastructure including; rail, tie and track switch installation, construction of switch panels, CWR rail destressing and thermite welding procedures, maintenance and construction of track drainage systems, maintenance and replacement of grade crossings, railroad bridge rail maintenance and inspection techniques, understanding of track outages, flagman and linemen safety support services, knowledgeable and understanding of Roadway Worker Protection safety regulations, familiarity and comfort with working along the railroad right of way, understanding of and understanding of Railroad Force Account inspection techniques and processes.

 

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience:

Five (5) years of experience in railroad maintenance of way construction or inspection work performed for a railroad or rail transit agency.

Considerable knowledge and experience with the principles and practices of railroad construction methods.

Must have knowledge and understanding of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) Track Safety Standards and Regulations applicable to railroad track construction and maintenance.

Must be able to read and understand complex construction plans, and specifications.

Must be able to write accurate and detailed daily inspection reports.

Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.

Must have experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Inspection experience working in railroad territory under the control of Metro-North Railroad (MNR), Amtrak, or Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA).
  • Experience with Railroad Force Account inspection and reporting procedures.
  • Experience with utilizing AASHTOWare and COMPASS for construction management and document control.

 

Special Requirements:

  • Candidate must possess (or pass required testing to obtain) Railroad Contractor Employee Safety Training credentials applicable to territory.
  • Candidate shall be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and auto insurance.
  • Candidate must have reliable transportation.

 

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform work year-round in varied weather conditions, and during off-hours and weekends when necessary.

  • Candidate shall have adequate physical ability and shall maintain such for proper continuation of job performance.
  • Candidate must have the physical stamina to be able to walk 5+ miles a day.
