M&J is seeking a Controller to plan, direct, and coordinate all accounting operational functions. This position typically manages the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of consolidated business results. The Controller will oversee regulatory reporting, frequently including tax compliance, hiring, training, and retaining skilled accounting staff and will perform assignments under the general supervision of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Responsibilities

• Coordinates activities of external auditors.

Coordinates and prepares internal and external financial statements.

• Works with the Chief Financial Officer to manage the budget process.
• Assesses current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes.
• Evaluates accounting and internal control systems.
• Evaluates the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed.
• Develops and monitors business performance metrics.
• Maximizes return on financial assets by establishing financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
• Guides financial decisions by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing policies and procedures.
• Protects assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
• Monitors and confirms financial condition by conducting audits and providing information to external auditors.
• Maximizes return and limits risk on cash by minimizing bank balances and making investments.
• Prepares budgets by establishing schedules; collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data; recommending plans.
• Achieves budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
• Provides status of financial condition by collecting, interpreting, and reporting financial data.
• Prepares special reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information and trends.
• Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation, anticipating future legislation, enforcing adherence to requirements, filing financial reports, and advising management on needed actions.
• Completes operational requirements by scheduling and assigning employees, following up on work results.
• Maintains financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees.
• Maintains financial staff job results by coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
• Protects operations by keeping financial information and plans confidential.
• Manages all accounting operations including Billing, A/R, A/P, GL and Counsel, Cost Accounting, Inventory Accounting and Revenue Recognition.
• Coordinates and directs the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts and reports variances.
• Prepares and publishes timely monthly financial statements.
• Coordinates the preparation of regulatory reporting.
• Researches technical accounting issues for compliance.
• Supports month-end and year-end close process.
• Ensures quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting.
• Manages and complies with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
• Develops and documents business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls.
• Additional controller duties as necessary.
• Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelors in accounting or a related field and minimum of 5 - 10 years experience.
