M&J is seeking a Special Inspector who will perform inspections to verify compliance with design documents and code requirements. This position typically conducts studies in the field. A Special Inspector will perform assignments under the general supervision of the Director of Special Inspections assigned to the Materials Testing and Special Inspections Lab.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to;


• Visits construction sites to review work in progress, inspect materials, and check the method of installation.
• Compiles daily reports outlining inspections and reporting deficiencies.
• Reads and understands specific project plans and specifications.
• Communicates with team regarding project requirements and results.
• Documents field inspection findings.
• Reviews drawings and submittals for conformance with project requirements.
• Completes field observations at appropriate intervals to review status and compliance of installed work.
• Provides clarity to all end users to allow them to rectify any non-conformance.
• Manages and tracks non-compliance items and ensures completion through coordination with contractors, design professionals, and other stakeholders.
• Assist with project and operational work when not in the field that may involve research, compliance, plan review, or estimating.
• Provides samples of materials for laboratory testing.
• Prepares sketches of construction installations that correlate with testing and inspection sites.
• Performs standard testing on materials.
• Participates in the monitoring of coordinating activities of team members and assists them as necessary.
• Read, interpret, and follow special written instructions and directives.
• Perform special assignments as needed.
• Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience:
One (1) year of field inspection experience working on applicable civil construction projects.
Must be able to write detailed daily inspection reports and perform complex quantity and engineering computations.
Must have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
Must have experience using Microsoft Word and Excel.

 

Eduacational Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or construction management preferred.

 

Preferred Qualifications:
• Work experience utilizing using AASHTOWare and COMPASS for construction management and document control.
• ACI Certification
• NETTCP Concrete
• NETTCP HMA Paving
• NETTCP Soils and Aggregate
• ATSSA Traffic Control Technician
• OSHA 10 Hour Construction Safety and Health

 

Special Requirements:
• Candidate must have reliable transportation.

 

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to perform work year-round in varied weather conditions, and during off-hours and weekends when necessary.
Candidate shall have adequate physical ability and shall maintain such for proper continuation of job performance.
