M&J is seeking a Project Accountant who will be responsible for managing the financial aspects of individual projects, including budgeting, cost tracking, revenue recognition, and billing, by monitoring project expenses, identifying variances from the budget, and providing detailed financial reports to the Chief Operating Officer and project managers to ensure projects are completed within financial parameters. This role will also assist assist in bookkeeping and payroll functions for all company divisions.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all aspects of the job costing process for all projects within the divisions. Produce and analyze job performance and profitability through job cost tracking reports. Ensure the financial integrity of project reporting through analysis of weekly and monthly job costs reports. Perform financial analysis of project costs versus budget.
  • Developing and presenting comprehensive financial reports on project performance, including cost breakdowns, revenue projections, and profitability analysis.
  • Reviewing and approving project invoices for clients, ensuring accurate billing based on project milestones and contract terms.
  • Analyzing project costs, identifying areas for cost reduction, and providing insights to project managers to optimize project finances.
  • Investigating discrepancies between budgeted costs and actual project expenses, identifying root causes, and recommending corrective actions.
  • Understanding project contracts, ensuring compliance with billing requirements, and managing revenue recognition based on contract terms.
  • Working closely with project managers and other team members to provide financial updates, address concerns, and support decision-making.
  • Accurately recording project-related transactions in accounting systems, reconciling accounts payable and receivable balances.
  • Research and resolve difficult accounting discrepancies and irregularities in a timely manner.
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance or related field.
  • 2-5 years of accounting experience required; 2 – 5 years of construction project experience is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.
  • Experience with project management methodologies and software.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy with data entry.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in accounting software and financial reporting tools.
